Direct answer: How much do new tires cost? The cost of 4 new tires installed is about $400 to $1,200, and most drivers pay $600 to $900, according to Walser (June 2026). A compact sedan is near the low end, an SUV near the top, and a truck or performance car can pass $1,500. Installation adds roughly $15 to $45 per tire.

How much do 4 new tires cost installed, by vehicle type?
Vehicle type matters most after tier, because it sets the tire size, and size sets the price. This table shows a typical installed set of four.
| Vehicle type | Set of four, installed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Small economy car | $400 to $700 | ThePricer (October 2026) |
| Mainstream sedan | $600 to $1,000 | ThePricer |
| Sedan (smaller) | $500 to $900 | Walser (June 2026) |
| Crossover or SUV | $700 to $1,300 | ThePricer |
| SUV or crossover | $700 to $1,200 | Walser |
| Pickup or all-terrain | $900 to $2,000 | ThePricer |
| Luxury or performance car | $1,000 to $2,500+ | ThePricer |
| Exotic or large high-performance | $2,000 to $4,000+ | ThePricer |
The two sources agree closely on cars and SUVs, which is why we treat $600 to $900 as the planning number for a normal car. A third guide, Gerald, puts the all-in total at $450 to $1,350, and a tire-shop owner quoted by one search listing put a typical SUV tire near $175. If a quote comes in far outside these ranges for a mainstream tire, ask what is in it.
How much do new tires cost by tier: budget, mid-range or premium?
Walser prices a set of four by quality tier, before it adds the installation fee:
| Tier | Set of four | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | $400 to $700 | Lowest price; check the treadwear warranty |
| Mid-range | $700 to $1,100 | Right fit for most everyday driving, per Walser |
| Premium and performance | $1,100 to $1,800 | Higher-end and performance tires |
| Luxury SUV or sports car | $2,000+ | Walser says a set can pass this once installed |
ThePricer gives per-tire figures that line up with this: small economy all-season tires (12 to 15 inch) at $80 to $150, mainstream all-season (16 to 20 inch) at $100 to $250, performance tires at $150 to $750+, and all-terrain tires at $150 to $500. Winter tires run $100 to $400+ per tire, covered in our winter tire cost guide.
Is premium worth it? Per mile, the gap is smaller than the sticker. SlashGear (February 2024) uses a $120 economy tire against a $200 premium tire and works out 0.8 cents per mile against 1.3 cents at 60,000 miles. That math assumes both last the same distance, so a premium tire that wears faster loses the advantage. Check the treadwear warranty before you pay extra.
What do tires cost by size?
Tire size is printed on the sidewall, in a format like 235/65R17. Bigger wheel diameters and wider tires cost more. Performance Plus Tire (article dated October 16, 2026) lists the typical per-tire price for common sizes, based on tires sold online:
| Size | Typical vehicle | Typical price per tire | Set of four (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 195/65R15 | Compact cars | about $99 | about $396 |
| 205/55R16 | Compact or midsize cars | about $129 | about $516 |
| 215/55R17 | Midsize sedans | about $148 | about $592 |
| 235/65R17 | Crossovers, midsize SUVs | about $171 | about $684 |
| 235/45R18 | Sport sedans | about $200 | about $800 |
| 275/55R20 | Full-size SUVs and pickups | about $232 | about $928 |
| LT265/70R17 | Pickups that tow or haul | about $239 | about $956 |
| 245/45R19 | Performance and luxury cars | about $268 | about $1,072 |
Its own takeaway is that at 18 inches and above, or on any light-truck tire, $300 typically buys one or two tires, not four. The same site lists starting prices as low as $50 for 195/65R15 and $130 for 275/60R20, which shows how wide the spread is inside one size. Those are the cheapest listings, and the typical column is a better planning number.
ThePricer adds that Goodyear’s 18-inch tires on its site run from $180 to $272 each, and its example of four 20-inch tires for a Jeep Grand Cherokee comes to about $900 to $1,156.
What does tire installation cost?
The tire price is only part of the bill. Installation covers mounting the tire on the wheel, balancing it, fitting a new valve stem (or TPMS service kit) and taking away the old tire.
- Typical range: Walser says $15 to $35 per tire for mounting, balancing, a new valve stem and disposal. Performance Plus says mounting and balancing is commonly $15 to $45 per tire, or $60 to $180 for a set. Gerald says $60 to $120 for the set.
- Median: Consumer Reports (October 2025), as quoted by ThePricer, found a $31 median install charge among buyers who paid one.
- Walmart: $18 per tire for tires bought at Walmart, or $72 for four, which includes mounting, a valve stem or TPMS service pack, lifetime balance and rotation, per ThePricer (October 2025). Tires bought elsewhere cost about $11 more per tire.
- Discount Tire: about $88 for four in one 2023 forum reply, a figure ThePricer flags as possibly outdated. It suggests budgeting $80 to $110 for a basic four-tire install, and mobile installation can add about $50 at participating stores (ThePricer, July 2026).
- Costco: no extra installation charge on tires bought through its tire center, according to ThePricer, though one Michelin listing showed a $2.25 per-tire disposal fee.
- Sam’s Club: $20 per tire, or $80 for four, including mounting, valve stem, lifetime balance and rotation, and flat repair.

What are the hidden fees on a set of tires?
Small items add up. The same guides list:
- Disposal: “a few dollars” per tire. Sam’s Club charges $2.50 per tire for recycling. Disposal is often folded into the install price.
- State tire fees: California charges $1.75 per new tire. Washington added $5 per tire from January 1, 2026, and Maryland charges $5 plus a $1 recycling fee per tire, so four tires add $24 there.
- TPMS service kit or valve stems: Performance Plus says these often run $10 to $40 for four, while Sam’s Club lists a TPMS reset from $5 per wheel or $19 per vehicle. A broken or dead sensor is a separate repair, priced in our TPMS sensor replacement guide at roughly $70 to $250 per sensor.
- Alignment: a separate service. Walser says $80 to $200, and Gerald $75 to $150. It is not required with every tire change, but ask for it if the car pulls or the old tires wore unevenly.
- Sales tax: applies to tires and, in some states, to services.
- Road-hazard coverage: optional. Walmart’s value package adds about $10 per tire for it, per ThePricer.
ThePricer puts the combined extras at $80 to $300+ on a four-tire purchase.
How much do four new tires cost in total? Worked examples
Here is the whole bill for three common cases, using the per-tire prices and fees above. Our arithmetic, with an assumed $25 per tire for installation and $2.50 per tire for disposal, plus a $25 TPMS kit:
| Case | Tires (4 x) | Install | Disposal | TPMS kit | Total before tax |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact car, 205/55R16 at $129 | $516 | $100 | $10 | $25 | about $651 |
| Crossover, 235/65R17 at $171 | $684 | $100 | $10 | $25 | about $819 |
| Full-size pickup, 275/55R20 at $232 | $928 | $100 | $10 | $25 | about $1,063 |
These land inside the $600 to $900 sweet spot for cars and crossovers and just above it for a pickup, which matches the published ranges. Performance Plus says a $300 set typically ends up around $385 to $550 installed, before tax, which fits the same arithmetic for the cheapest tires.
Where is the cheapest place to buy tires?
No single retailer wins every size, so compare the same tire across three or four sellers.
- Warehouse clubs (Costco, Sam’s Club) bundle installation. ThePricer lists the Michelin CrossClimate2 at Costco for $299.99 per tire, or $1,199.96 for four before an $80 promotion.
- Mass retailers (Walmart) charge a flat per-tire install of $18 on tires they sell.
- Dedicated tire chains and online sellers add choice and frequent rebates. ThePricer says manufacturer rebates are often $60 to $120 back on four tires. If you buy online, price the shipping and a local installer’s fee for outside tires.
A quick rule: compare the out-the-door price, meaning tires, install, disposal, fees and tax, not the sticker per tire.
How can you pay less for new tires?
- Get the out-the-door price in writing from at least three sellers for the exact size and brand.
- Look for rebates. Mail-in or prepaid-card rebates of $60 to $120 on a set of four are common.
- Buy only the tier you need. Mid-range tires are the right fit for most everyday driving, Walser says.
- Ask what the install price includes. Lifetime balancing and rotation are worth real money over the life of a set.
- Ask the shop whether to replace all four or two. Mixing tires with very different tread depths is a concern on all-wheel-drive vehicles, so check your owner’s manual and ask the installer before buying only two.
- Skip add-ons you do not need today, such as optional protection plans, unless the price is clear.
- Check the date code. Tires have a manufacture week and year molded on the sidewall. Ask for a recent one.
Tires wear out by tread depth and age, and the common minimum is 2/32 inch of tread, a figure NHTSA publishes. Do not wait for the last bit of tread, since wet grip fades first. If you drive in snow, a second set can pay for itself, which we cover in are winter tires worth it. What size tires does my car need?
Look at the sidewall of your current tire, the driver-door jamb sticker or the owner’s manual. The size reads like 235/65R17: 235 mm width, 65 aspect ratio and a 17-inch wheel. You can also use a tire-size lookup from any retailer by entering your make, model and year. Do not move to a bigger wheel without checking the cost, because a one-inch bump in wheel size usually raises the price per tire and can lower ride comfort.
FAQ
How much does it cost to put 4 new tires on a car?
About $400 to $1,200 installed, with most drivers paying $600 to $900, according to Walser. ThePricer gives $400 to $700 for a small economy car, $600 to $1,000 for a mainstream sedan and $700 to $1,300 for a crossover or SUV.
How much are tires for an SUV?
ThePricer puts a set for a crossover or SUV at $700 to $1,300 installed, and Walser at $700 to $1,200. A single 235/65R17 crossover tire is about $171 and a 275/55R20 full-size SUV tire about $232, per Performance Plus Tire.
What is the average cost of one new tire?
Between $100 and $250 for a mainstream all-season tire (16 to 20 inch), per ThePricer, with small economy sizes at $80 to $150. Performance and all-terrain tires cost more, from $150 up to $500 or higher.
How much does it cost to mount and balance tires?
Typically $15 to $45 per tire, or $60 to $180 for four, according to Performance Plus. Walmart charges $18 per tire and Sam’s Club $20 per tire, and Costco does not charge extra for tires it sells.
Are expensive tires worth the money?
Often, if they last longer. SlashGear’s example works out to 0.8 cents per mile for a $120 economy tire and 1.3 cents for a $200 premium tire at 60,000 miles, so the premium costs about half a cent more per mile before any difference in life, grip or stopping distance.
